How to drive manual / standard questions....?

i just started driving standard on a 2000 saturn sc1

1st: is it okay to start out in second gear instead of first ?

2nd: when you're braking, do you have to push the clutch in ? or just brake without the clutch ?

3rd: my car has about 60K miles...should i change the tranny fluid ? if so, where can i find it ? the manual only has directions for automatic fluid

thanksHow to drive manual / standard questions....?
always start in first gear to get rolling unless your in snow and need a little less torque on the engine to keep from spinning the tires.

when braking you don't push the clutch in until your just about stopped so the engine doesn't stall.

With a manual tranny you don't have to worry about changing the fluid until about 100,000 if you want to.How to drive manual / standard questions....?
1. It's first gear for a reason. You can start out in 2nd gear but you'll accelerate slower until the RPMS are what they should be at for 2nd gear.

2. Either put the clutch in or shift into neutral. If you just brake without putting the clutch in or putting it in neutral, then you're going to stall.

3. It's a good idea to change the fluid, especially if you don't know when the last change was. You can get it at any auto store. It's alot like changing oil. Drain it/plug the drain, then put in the correct amount. How to drive manual / standard questions....?
1.It is ok if to start out in second gear,if first gear needs changed within the first 10-15 mph.I drive a manual and it doesn't make that much of a difference, unless you are starting off on an up hill incline.....2.you don't have to push the clutch in to slow down, but you will need to downshift when the rpms get to low.Now coming to a complete stop,Yes you will have to push the clutch in and hold the brake with your other foot.I use the corner of my heel to hit the accelerator, while holding the brake, for smoother takeoffs...3..you will need to take the pan off the bottom of the transmission.where the dipstick normally is there should be a plug, you will need to take out to refill it.
