A few noobish 2001 Buell Blast questions. (Yeah yeah, I don't have the owner's manual.)?

When I turn the key in the ignition, what looks like my oil lamp comes on...When the bike is started, it goes off. In cars, all the lights come on at first to let you know things are working OK, is that the same with this bike?

The dumbest question of all: How can I tell when I'm running low on gas. I can't find any gas meter anywhere, and looking at the lamps that it has on it, it only appears to have oil, bright lights and turn signals. Could be one more, I don't remember. But I definitely can't find the amount of gas I have left. Maybe the %26quot;oil lamp%26quot; is really the gas lamp?

How often should I change the oil. I think it was changed 5 months ago. And how often should the brake fluid be changed.

Final question! Someone installed a custom windshield on the bike, that I took off (well, it broke off but that's a painful and unnecessary story), and I have the original (better looking windshield), how do I attach it again. If you don't answer this question, don't worry. It's not importantA few noobish 2001 Buell Blast questions. (Yeah yeah, I don%26039;t have the owner%26039;s manual.)?
The buell blast is a very dependable starter bike. In starting the bike oil light will come on before starting but as long as it goes off after starting bike is fine.

Blast's can get about 60 miles on a full tank but you also have as reserve position on your fuel petcock (fuel on/off/reserve switch located on bottom of tank forget which side) if bike starts stuttering switch to reserve this should get you to next fuel station.

Oil should be change every 500 miles or 1 year.

wind screens that come stock attach with 4 little screw but if you need brackets it's a little more work but easy and parts are cheap for the BlastA few noobish 2001 Buell Blast questions. (Yeah yeah, I don%26039;t have the owner%26039;s manual.)?
1. OK, yes the oil lamp that comes on when you turn the key is for oil pressure, before you turn the bike on you have no oil pressure which is why the light is illuminated. Once you start up it starts pumping oil and the light should go off.

2. On the Blast models I believe there is a fuel reserve light which should come on when you have about a half gallon of gas left in the tank, start looking for a station when that light comes on. Don't confuse with the oil pressure light, they are seperate.

3. I believe the manual calls for a change every 2500 miles, if you use synthetic oil you can probably go a bit longer maybe 3500 miles but 2500 is a safe bet on changes, don't forget the oil filter too. The brake fluid would only need to be changed rarely or if you have a problem with %26quot;soft%26quot; brakes from air in the lines. I would say maybe 50,000 miles on brake fluid.

4. I think the windshield is a bolt on, should be a bunch of screws around the edge that fasten to the front head fairing above the gauges.

Hope that helps you out.A few noobish 2001 Buell Blast questions. (Yeah yeah, I don%26039;t have the owner%26039;s manual.)?
Hey, here goes:

1) The oil light should be the same as on a car. Here's why. The oil light warns of Low Oil Pressure. When the ignition is on and the engine isn't running, the pressure is naturally low (no pump, no engine parts moving.) When it fires up, the light goes off. No problem there.

2) Most bikes don't have a gas gauge. They use a reserve tank system. The switch that turns the gas on and off should also have a %26quot;reserve%26quot; setting. When you run out of gas, you put the tank on Reserve, and you have to get more gas soon, usually within 15 miles or so. I'm not sure if you can hear the gas on the Buell, since it's stored in the body, but on regular-tank bikes, you can pull the bike from side to side, and hear the gas in the tank.

3) Oil should be changed every 1,000 to 3,000 miles....the more, the better, of course. Some say 1,000 miles, but I don't have the tenacity to do it that often.

4) I know nothing about the windshield on this bike.

How do I change rear wheel seals on my 2004 Yukon XL Denali AWD?

I have oil getting onto my rear wheel and gets hot and smokes. I think that it is the wheel seal. My brake fluid is full so I ruled that out. I need to know how to change it and need to know if it is difficult to do? I am mechanically inclined but don't want to do it if too difficult. Any photos would be great. E-mail me if necessary. How do I change rear wheel seals on my 2004 Yukon XL Denali AWD?
Check the fluid in the rear. if it is low make sure to ad gear lube.

if you are going to do it yourself buy a repair book at parts store. If you do not want to buy a book go to the library they will make you copies of the pages that help you. .Remove wheel, Remove disc brake rotor, remove rear differential cover. Remove shaft between the spider gears that is held in by a lock bolt. Shove the axle from the outside toward the differential and remove the %26quot;C%26quot; clips that hold the axle in inside the diff. and then the axle can be removed. putting the seal in is the easy part good luke

  • What is the estimated cost of changing all fluids in my 2003 GSXR600?

I am new to motorcycles and bought a 2003 bike recently. Its been a long time since any fluids have been changed. Can someone let me know what fluids should be changed and how much would it cost to change them. I am only aware of brake and fork fluids apart from engine oil. Is there anything else I should change? What is the estimated cost of changing all fluids in my 2003 GSXR600?
RTFM! The owner's manual has all those answers. It will suggest that many things be done by a trained service tech, but if you're feeling saucy, buy a service manual, the correct tools, and do it yourself. If I were you, I'd let an experienced set of eyes take a look at least once to make sure there's nothing wrong that you haven't noticed.

Pass. Rear brake not engaging...not bleeding...caliper is not seized...follow line to dual proportioning valve

I have a Mazda MX-3 GS V6...it has 4 disc brakes. I went to change my brakes and notice that I coudl not bleed the pass. rear caliper, but the other three bled normal... so I took off the calliper to see if it was seized, but it was movable, and I even changed the piston boot and rings...so I started chasing the line unhoooking and trying to bleed at ever connection and no fluid...I followed the pass rear brake line to the proportioning valve, and thats where I stopped...could anyone explain how a dual proportion valve coudl malfunction if that is the case?Pass. Rear brake not engaging...not bleeding...caliper is not seized...follow line to dual proportioning valve
It seems odd, even unfortunate that the valve would be siezed on such a new auto, but nothing is perfect. Good thing you have the wherewithal to research this it could have been an expensive fix it at a shop. Good luck getting everything swapped out and bled. That can be a tight area to work in and if even one of the lines to the PValve won't come loose it can be a knuckle busting, frustrating job.

Good luck.....Pass. Rear brake not engaging...not bleeding...caliper is not seized...follow line to dual proportioning valve

I just changed the front brake pads for my '02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou

...out that now I have to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor for the car to stop. It also comes with a %26quot;hissing%26quot; sound when I depress the pedal. Does it mean I have to take the front tires out again and repurge the brakes? How do I do it without having to bleed out all the brake fluid? Thank you so much.I just changed the front brake pads for my %26039;02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou
as with the other answer I do agree you probably are low on brake fluid and you may have not bleed the brakes properly if you do not have a vacuum bleeder for your brakes you have to make sure you push the brake pedal very quickly and repeatedly then push and hold the pedal hard as some one opens the bleeder nut and the pedal hits the floor do not let the pedal come up off the floor until the bleeder is tightened or you may suck air into the line if you did have a loose brake line you would loose all your fluid pretty quick but yes do check them all and make sure they are not leaking

also the power booster may be leaking but I doubt it very much if it was fine before the shoes where changed the hissing sound is probably Viacom from low fluid

hope this helpsI just changed the front brake pads for my %26039;02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou
Sounds like low brake fluid, yes you will need to purge air again. Also brakes may not be adjusted properly. Also check for any leakage at master cylinder lines etc and also the lines at brake housing at wheel.I just changed the front brake pads for my %26039;02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou
Why did you bleed the brakes if you were doing a pad slap? Totally not necessary unless you were completely flushing the system.

One other option is that you could have twisted the brake hose when you put the caliper back on. That can cause a soft pedal.

The brake pedal is hitting the floor with no pressure. Why is it doing this?

I have a 2002 Mazda 626. I changed the brakes on it. I couldn't figure out how to take the caliper off. I read something on the internet and I accidentely took off the brake line that was connected to the caliper. I then figured out how to change the pads. When I put everything back in it's place I bled the brakes. At first the fluid was coming out like spit. Then it started to come out in a stream, which ment no air in the lines. But as I started to pump the brakes, the pedal was going all the way down to the floor and wasn't hardening at all. Please help me in this situation and figure out what I can do to fix this issue. Any ideas will help. Thanks alot! The brake pedal is hitting the floor with no pressure. Why is it doing this?
firs, check for leaks, if no leaks, you still have air in the lines. start with the bleeder thats farthest away from the master cylinder first, that would be, right rear, then left rear, then right front then finish up with left front. do that until all the air is out. also check the back shoes, they might need set up tighter against the drums. The brake pedal is hitting the floor with no pressure. Why is it doing this?
Probably still air in the lines. You didn't let the master cylinder run out of fluid while you were bleeding the brakes did you?The brake pedal is hitting the floor with no pressure. Why is it doing this?
    did, you close the bleeders?

did you bleed them in the correct order?

did you make sure the brake resevoir was full during this whole process?

do you have a broken brake line or did a wheel cylinder come apart during the process?

1992 Chevy Lumina Brake Caliper Spring Line?

okay i need to change out my brake caliper because the caliper piston would not go all the way back in the caliper... so i disconnected 2 lines only one for the brake fluid and the other im assuming is the acctuall brake line? right? well matters not im putting back the way it was but i noticed on my new brake caliper the only way to get back on is to move the spring down so i can get it on the caliper but i dont see how that can happen ive already cut myself 4 times with a flathead screw driver trying to pry the spring down so i can put the line in... note:the spring is OVER a line and that line is the one that goes into the caliper, the slide in spot is not big enough for the spring and if it was it would defeat its purpose as brakes so any help on how i can do this without me getting cut anymore any help is appreciated and no dumb comments im learning about this stuff thanks1992 Chevy Lumina Brake Caliper Spring Line?

  • How long does it take for brake fluid to work?

My brakes started acting funny after I had the rooters replaced.I have to push them almost to the floor. I then relized that the brake fluid was almost empty. I filled it back up but nothing seemed to change. I've driven it about 10 miles since I filled the fluid. Will I eventualy see a change or am I out of luck? How long does it take for brake fluid to work?
they probably need to be bleed - letting the car sit for a couple hours sometimes letts the air filter out of the system - but regular bleeding works betterHow long does it take for brake fluid to work?
There is most likely air in the system which will have to be blead out. When your system is functioning correctly, the result is instant pressure. How long does it take for brake fluid to work?
You have a leak in the lines, or the cylinders, or the master cylinder. As a result it ran low on fluid and introduced air in the lines. Adding fluid would do nothing to get rid of the air. It's dangerous to keep driving, you may totally lose your brakes. Take it in, have the leak found and fixed and the system bled.

Air compresses, that is why the pedal is going all the way down. How long does it take for brake fluid to work?
you have a leak in the system and you probably have air in the system now. when does brake fluid start working? when does motor oil start working? gasoline? as soon as you put it in, it is working, in your case, something else isnt working. i strongly suggest to tow it to a shop. dont drive it. the life you save may be mine, or my child's.How long does it take for brake fluid to work?
their is air in the line, you have to bleed themHow long does it take for brake fluid to work?
you have air in the lines and you need to bleed the brakes to get all og the air out. 1st have someone pump the brakes without the engine running when the brake pedal gets hard to push looseing the bleeder valve to let out the air. have the person hold the brake pedal down until you tighting the valve. do this on all 4 wheels then check to see if you have good brakes, if not repeat process until you do. also make sure you dont let the resavoir run out of brake fluidHow long does it take for brake fluid to work?
Brake fluid works immediately, if the brake change has been done properly. Check if there are any leaks (any fluid on the ground where you park your car)..that need to be repaired. Also, it could be the person who changed the brakes did not bleed them to get all the air bubbles out. You should not have to push your brakes all the way to the floor......! -- For what you explained, it must be a leak, check the brake lines, the actual fluid reservoir or the area where the parts where replaced. Better take it back to the mechanic, or if you did it yourself, double check. ** Don't want to sound negative, but if you lose your brakes while driving (God forbids!)...put your car in neutral! Hopefully you will not take any chances any more driving the car in such conditions. Too dangerous. Be careful and all the best. How long does it take for brake fluid to work?
you have to bleed your brake lines to get the air out of them. have someone to pump the breaks while you open the valve on the rotors then when it goes to the floor tighten the valve and tell them to pump it up again. do this till the air is out. check fluid then go to the other rotor.

My back breaks Break unevenly in my 2001 Hyundai Sante Fe. What could it be and how can i fix it?

I went to get my inspection done on my vehicle and failed. Because my breaks where %26quot;unbalanced%26quot;. So I took my car to a mechanic with a note saying my breaks where unbalanced. They resurfaced my rotors which were only 6 months old, changed my breaks, and changed the brake fluid. I went back and it failed once again for the same reason. What else could this unbalanced breaks be? From what the guy at the inspection facility explained to me it檚 that my back wheels are breaking unevenly, and that is also what檚 causing my wheel to shake when I do break. Please help! I have a month to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it. Also it's a 2001 hyundai sante fe.!My back breaks Break unevenly in my 2001 Hyundai Sante Fe. What could it be and how can i fix it?
I have been in the car business for over 10 years, with Hyundai for over 5 and I have never heard of unbalanced brakes. What I think they may be telling you is your caliper is sticking.

Brake systems are simple. You apply the pedal, fluid is sent to the caliper, a piston extends and pushes the pads against the rotor, slowing the vehicle.

There are generally more problems with rear brakes simply because they don't have to work as hard as the front. I suggest a brake service. The technician should remove the pads and service them and the slides, the caliper assembly is sanded for rust and treated with a special lubricant.

I'm not sure of the regulations in your state, but in NY, you only fail a vehicle inspection if your brakes are metal to metal.

Hyundai suggests front and rear brake services every 15,000 miles.

Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?

If I need to put my entire car up on axel stands (so i can do a full brake fluid bleed/change) how should I go about it.

I have a manual, so I do know where the axel stand points are, but it doesn't say anything about order.

Loosen all lugs first... but then raise front driver's side first and place axel stand? Then front passenger side.. or front drivers rear? I ask cause I don't want the car unbalanced or toppling. Maybe best to start with rear wheels ?

Also my property (driveway) is slightly.. ever so slightly sloped all around.... (like 10 to 15 degrees)... is that too much risk?

Thanks. (I hope i've not asked something foolish where it shows how inexperienced I am) At the moment I've only got 2 axel stands so will have to source 2 more.. and I've got a brand new well-rated 2 ton trolley jack.Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?
You don't need to raise the whole car in one go. It's easier and safer and to do the job in stages, first the back and then the front. Contrary to some answers, the order in which you bleed the brakes does matter. Start with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder, i.e. if its on the front nearside, start bleeding from the rear offside and end with the front nearside wheel.Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?
Check Clitons on Haynes Repair manuals for some good suggestions.Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?
I have always lifted the rear of the vehicle first. I found that when you raise the front first, the rear of the vehicle is too close to the ground to get the jack under the car. Be very cautious about lifting the car on un-level ground. People really are killed every year when a car falls on them. If you really have to do this on a sloped driveway, make sure that the car is braced thoroughly so as not to fall down the driveway. You shouldn't have to get under the vehicle anyway in order to bleed the brakes.Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?
The order does not matter as long as you do not do one complete side before the other. So, don't put the left side on stands and then switch to the right. Nor should you do one corner (right front) and then do the opposite corner (back left). Do either both front tires first or both back tires. Mechanically there is no reason for this - simple safety is all.

BTW, 10-15 degrees is a pretty significant grade. Ideally you would do this on a flat surface. If you must do it on the slope make sure the car is parallel (running with) and not perpendicular to the slope. And use chocks until you get the car up.Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?
With only 2 jack stands if your going to bleed your brakes, it's best to jack the back end of your vehicle up first and do the back. The order doesn't matter much. But most importantly is to block the front tires, block the front side and back side of both front tire's. Then jack one rear tire up at a time. When bleeding it's best to start with the passenger side rear tire first. This is the brake farthest from the master cylinder. Then do the drivers side rear. After this let your car down and proceed to the front. Block the rear tires the same way and after you have the front jacked up do the passenger side first. Also make sure that the master cylinder stays full of brake fluid. You should have no problems doing it this way. Just make sure the tires are properly blocked so the car won't roll on you. Safety is always important when working under a vehicle. Take care and take your time. Keeping the fluid in the master cylinder full will insure that you do not get any air back into the lines. After 2 or 3 bleeder opens check and refill.Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?
Don't worry about it. But got to ask, why do you want to jack it up? You shouldn't have to just to bleed and re-top the brake fluid. You must be changing parts as well, yeah? I'd do back axle, one wheel at a time, putting the car back down again after each wheel, then front axle one after the other. This keeps the car more stable. Use a one man kit (if available) and remember to finish on the wheel closest to the master cylinder. If you really want to go up all round (not recommended on uneven ground), make sure that the axle stands have a good spread on the bottom. And whilst you lift the back, chock the front wheels, it's really dangerous if you don't. Out of interest as well, I'd use a trolley jack, they're a lot more stable than your manufacturer supplied jack and quicker and easier to use.Best order or way to put my entire car up on axel stands / jack stands?
I tell how I do this, but, it a matter of preference and experience.

I center the jack on the Drive Wheel first and jack enough to place the stands on the lowest setting. IF, you have the possibility the vehicle will roll put some blocks behind the Free Wheels. Once the drive wheels are on the stands. Let the jack down just a little to remove pressure and shake the vehicle to see if the stands stayed firm. Then let the jack down and go jack the other end and place those stands, but, this time jack to as high as you want. Then if you need to raise the first to level the vehicle do so. Once everything adjusted remove the jack and shake the vehicle Left/Right, Back and forth, up/down (Well maybe not up/down) if a stand look like it not stay stable just readjust that one stand. Usually I then move my jack around to where I work and jack just to touch, like a backup stand, but, not holding weight.

Always take the time to do this correct. Also, if the vehicle does start to fall you can see which way it go and move away as it usually move slow at first. Think of holding a Basketball (Car) with both hands (Jack Stands) above your head. Without bending your arms, bring the basket ball down to eye level (Ground). Notice it not come down on your head? This how a vehicl will fall on jack stands. It move in one direction slow as it fall.

If, you can not find a good jack point in the center, then you may have to do one wheel or one side at a time. I would work with one wheel. Also, the car may try to fall when you jack the other side. So, keep an eye on your stands.

    Good Luck, and be careful.

Old Man Dirt has given you the best info.

If the brakes are manual brakes, no booster, they are going to feel hard and if you've never driven non-power brakes they are going to feel like they are not working.

A complete adjustment and bleeding of the system would probably be a good idea, the order would be RR, LR, RF, LF, always start at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder when you bleed brakes. Be sure and keep the master cylinder full as you bleed the brakes. Bleeders at the wheel cylinder will break off so be prepared for that possibility, nothing you've done wrong, they're just old and rusty.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
Do you feel like the brakes are working better after you pump them a few times. If so the brakes need bleed. If the car has power brakes, then the boost cylinder may be shot or not hooked up. A quick test for this is to depress the brakes firmly, start the engine. The brake pedal should move towards the floor. If not, then suspect the boost system. This consists of a booster on the master, a vacuum canister and tubing to connect the system to the intake manifold. So, not only can the booster fail, but the lines can rot, the canister rust out, but the engine may not be pulling a vacuum.

Make sure the drum brakes are adjusted right, there should be a slight resistance felt as the wheel is turned.

Bleeding the brakes requires a bleeder wrench, a piece of hose, a container, spare brake fluid and two people unless a one man bleeder is use. One person holds the pedal down while the other opens the bleeder and closes it, at which time the person holding the brake down releases it and depresses it again. This precess goes on until the air is out of the line. The hose is placed on the bleeder nipple and inserted into the container (partly filled with brake fluid) so that it can be determined if air is still coming out of the system. start with the brake farthest from the master. Speed bleeders have a check valve in them so opening and closing the bleeder is not needed and one person can do the job.

Care must be taken to keep the brake system with spare fluid at all times and also to keep the fluid off of paint.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
That's an old model and you have to be careful loosening the bleeder screws, they will break off very easily. If they do you will need to replace cylinder on rear calipers on the front. This can run into some money. If they do break its possible to get them out with an %26quot;easy out%26quot; Your auto parts person should know what size you need. Before starting to remove the bleeders make sure you use liquid wrench. The cylinders are about ten dollars each the calipers are more but, they break less often. Be careful. If you don't know how to bleed them you might want to get help. If not done properly, you could get into an accident. It's not a job you want to do half a**ed.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
You may bleed the brakes till you are blue in the face and it may not work...If they are power assist drums you may have other issues...Your booster may be bad...My 67 plymouth had power 4 wheel drum brakes...The booster was bad...It cost about 300.00 to have the booster rebuilt...I just went for a complete disc brake conversion and cured all my problems...There is a company called just suspension..they have come out with a big bore master cylinder..You can run your brakes with no booster...I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?
It's best done with two people. Most repair manuals should have a section on this. If bleeding the the brakes doesn't work, I would suggest looking at replacing the master cylinder. And if you actually have a power booster I would also check that.I got a 65 dodge coronet with drum brakes ..notice i was having to apply alot of pressure?

How often should I service my car?

Is it best done with a MOT? I'm going to service it for the first time as I have recently brought it does this mean they change the oil and brake fluid? How often should I service my car?
The oil will be changed, as will the oil filter, the rest depends on what service you ask for.

if you want a full service, then the air filter, pollen filter(if fitted) and fuel filter should be changed, if it is a petrol car then the spark plugs should be changed as well.

people tend to get their cars serviced with when the mot test is due, this way it is one trip to the garage, plus you know the mot is done once a year, so t its a reminder to get the service done once a year aswell.

as for how often is a difficult question to answer without knowing your annual millage, what type of car you have and how the is car driven, but as a general rule, once a year is fine, if your doing mega mega miles then twice or even three times a year, some taxis have a full service every 6 weeks!!

The brake fluid wont be changed, but you can ask them to test it, they should have a brake fluid tester at the garage, the brake fluid as a general rule, should be changed every 10 years.

as you have only just purchased the vehicle, i would recommend getting the cambelt replaced aswell, unless it has recently been changed and the vehicle has come with a service history book or record, or even receipts, to prove this. as a general rule again the cam belt should be change every 5 years, some cars are more some less. if the cambelt breaks, it usually results in a very costly repair.

if you want the exact service intervals, the exact period of time between servicess, and the period of time the cambelt should be changed i recommendd speaking to a main dealer i.e the main ford car dealership, or nissan etc etc, they should be able to tell you everything you need to know about servicing your car.

hope this helpsHow often should I service my car?
It's good to service your car every 2000-3000 miles and yes the mechanic you take it to will change the oil and he will probably check the brake fluid levels and if it's low he will fill it up to the proper amount. How often should I service my car?
it's best to bring in the car before you pay for it and have it gone thru.Believe me , it's worth the c-note.Anyhow, the garage normally only does what YOU ASK THEM TO DO.you must tell them what you want done, ask them what they do for the price...never assume! Todays oils..change every 4,000 miles along with the filter. That's something one should do themselves every year to be able to stick yer head right in there to see a situation before it's a problem....fluid leaks...good luck

  • When to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?

    i have two questions:

The first check up is done at 600miles, they changed my Oil and brake fluids, checked tire pressure and lubed the chain.

when is the second time to go to get the bike checked?

also, how do you clean your brake discs so that they don't make noiseWhen to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
Your oil changes should be at around 3000-4000 miles, and depending on the bike, (using a general figure here) your first tune up and valve adjustments should be made at the first oil change, and every 6000 miles (like I said, depending on the bike) give or take. If your brakes are making noise, have the shop fix them, they shouldnt be, and if its brand new, the bike is under warranty. If your rotors are glazes, or have a defect, the warranty will cover it.When to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
Never heard of cleaning the disc to stop noise.

I usually chamfer the leading edge of the pads.

Also I spray the back of the pads with an aerosol (available at Pep Boys, etc) that puts a rubbery/plastic coating on them. There are also shims that glue onto the back to serve the same purpose. When to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
depending on where you live you should bring your bike in every spring before you start riding again for maintenance just to make sure everything is running right after the winter make sure there are no clogs or anything of that sort in your fuel, brake, intake lines just as a precaution and i agree with jon if your breaks are squealing or making any sort of noise they shouldn't be bring it in i had my brakes do that because they were too tight and it messed up my calipers which is a lot more expensive to fix down the roadWhen to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
Brakes can make a noise because of brake dust and road dirt getting on the disc ?you can use a brake cleaner that comes in aerosol form ?it evaporates very quickly and leaves no residue, spray on and wipe off with a clean lint-free rag.

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/store

However there are other reasons brakes make a noise ?the most important being that the pads are worn check them to see if there is sufficient material left ?there is often a groove on the pad. Some brakes and calipers benefit from a blob of copper grease (copper has a higher melting point than ordinary greases) between the pad and the caliper pistons (for obvious reasons do not get it on the face of the pad). If the noise is intermittent when you wheel the bike at walking pace you might have a warped disc 撀爐his is expensive as you have to replace the disc (you can skim them but is it worth the risk?). A glazed pad might make a noise and you would notice a reduced braking efficiency, the glazing can be removed with steel wool, but if they are glazing because they are rubbing you will need to have the caliper looked at, if they are glazing because you are constantly applying the brake you will need to adjust your riding habits.

    96 cavalier with bad brakes?

I have a 96 cavalier with a 2.2L. and I am having problems with the brakes! Every time I try to stop the rear brakes lock up and then the abs kicks in and the abs continues pumping till you stop. Note: It has drum brakes. I have already taken apart the rear brakes and checked them out all hardware is good, shoes are good, wheel cylinders are good, I.E. at least they are not leaking, I can't tell if they are frozen but I don't think so. I have also completely changed the brake fluid in it hoping this might help some how, but no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

    Thanks!!

Please serious answers only. Thanks.96 cavalier with bad brakes?
I have to go with Whoa D's answer. I'm thinking bad proportioning valve (or possibly another fault) is causing the rear wheels to lock up. When this happens your EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) is going to start seeing two different wheel speed signals coming from the wheel speed sensors. The rear wheel speed sensors will show a very low speed due to wheel lockup, and the front wheel speed sensors will still show close to actual vehicle speed. This would indicate to the EBCM that there is a wheel slip condition and trigger the EBCM to initiate an ABS stop and engage the ABS system. Just my .02, anyway.96 cavalier with bad brakes?
1 ABS and regular brakeing system r 2 differnt things

2 after replaceing 2 wheel sensors at 125 each...I pulled the ABS fuse and put tape on the ABS lite,,,,i learned driving before ABS was invented and think its an added expense to save idiot drivers

3 ABS computer cost a lot 300 to 1200 dollars96 cavalier with bad brakes?
Ok this is straight out of my brakes class' shop manual.

    1. Failed master cylinder.

    2. Restricted brake lines preventing fluid to flow to front brakes(check your brake lines).

    3. Defective proportioning valve allowing excessive pressure to rear brakes.

    4. ABS fault

But again the most likely is a faulty proportioning valve on Drum brakes.

Local Ford dealer screwed up my Fiesta's brakes, where do I stand legally?

I've had a V-reg (2000) Ford Fiesta 1.25 for a little over six months, and the foot brake has gotten progressively worse over time, so earlier this week I took the car in to a Ford dealership in Kent for a service. I told them specifically that the brakes were definitely not right when I took it in.

The next day they call me back and tell me the rear brake shoes and cylinders needed replacing, but that otherwise the car was fine. They also changed the brake fluid and engine oil. I agreed to pay the 拢330 for them to do the job and picked up the car the following day.

When I tried using the brakes I noticed there had been no improvement, and although the handbrake was now a little stiffer I was disappointed that the fault I took it in for had not been rectified. On top of this the (!) brake warning light started flashing intermittently on the dashboard. By this point it was Friday night so I had no way of getting in touch with them about it.

Saturday morning, I start the car up, roll down the driveway and realise the foot brake has completely gone, there is no braking whatsoever with it and the pedal is really floppy. The handbrake still works but that's it.

Considering how potentially dangerous it was for them to return my car in this state I was wondering where I stand regarding getting them to collect and repair the car for free?Local Ford dealer screwed up my Fiesta%26039;s brakes, where do I stand legally?
Get a report from another mechanic then file a fraud complaint with your state's department of commerce or some such branch. They will investigate and if the company is found guilty, they will reward you compensation and usually publish the results on television. At least, that's what they do in my state.

How can you ask that and not say where you live? Do you think the cost is the same across the entire country (if you live in the US or Canada)? Labor rates vary regionally as do the cost of the fluids that would be used.

Usually you can have that done at a place that specializes in those quick oil changes. They have a variety of services related to automotive fluids. See this site:

    http://www.jiffylube.com/autoservices/au

If you do you will note that there are no prices quoted. That is so the local outlet can have a standard rate for each service but can occasionally offer promotions to increase business. Find a local outlet like this (or similar) and call them. They will be happy to quote a price. How much $ to change all fluids in car ? ?
This also depends on what kind of car you have, and if you're doing the labor yourself. I'd say between 300-500. Go for the lower end if you're doing all the work yourself, or higher end if it's a dealer. The trans. will be the most expensive part. How much $ to change all fluids in car ? ?
Depends on what kind of vehicle and where you're at but probably $300-500. Get estimates from two or three places. Many shops/dealerships have preset, discounted prices on scheduled maintenance. How much $ to change all fluids in car ? ?
I would figure around a grand, rotors calipers pads (front brakes) , drums wheel cylinders shoes(rear brakes) , possible new fuel lines if they are rotting out,1 hr min. for brake line flush plus fluid, anti freeze flush plus new anti freeze make sure system is pressure tested. You have have to add in disposal fees for fluids, brake and anti freeze.transmission filter flush and new fluids. Rotor vary from 40 to 100 bucks each , pads about 50 bucks a set same as the drums and shoes, transmission filter any where from 20 to 60 bucks could be more.Oil change is about 25 bucks, don't forget to rotate your tires while your at it.highly recommend the brakes are done properly surfacing rotors and drums are possible but most shops will suggest replacing them to avoid warping and other possible problems that can ac-cure and will save you money in the long run.

What to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?

i have just bought a used 1999 honda accord ex a week ago. i dont know how to do a preventive maintainance. like how often do i have to change the oil, brake pads, brake fluid, radiator coolant, engine coolant, etc. please give me idea. my car has 2.3L, 4-cylinder engine. thanks a lotWhat to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?
Congrats on the best running cars in the world. You made a great choice buying a Honda.

First did you buy it %26quot;certified pre-owned%26quot; from a dealership or did you buy the car from a private party?

If you bought the car certified pre-owned you should just look into your owners manual that should have came with the car. Look for scheduled maintence in the contents and follow it the best you can. It will tell you how often to change the oil and when to perform routine maintenance. If you are unsure the maintence has been completed just ask the dealership where you bought it.

Now here is the fun stuff. If you bought the car from a private party you should of asked the owner to provide receipts of the maintenance performed. If they can not; you could of asked for a lower price so you can get this maintence performed. Again just consult your owners manual for the scheduled maintenance intervals and follow them the best you can.

I hope this helps! I have owned 2 hondas in my life and have never been let down. I just performed scheduled maintenance and they continued to meet my expectations. What to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?
I like to change the oil every 3 months especially because I drive it alot, The Brake pads I think its every 20,000 miles the brake fluid you should just add more when you need it. The Coolant and radiator fluid look at every once in a while. Since I drive alot I always check it every week to see if i need to add any. Along with the oil replace the Spark Plugs and Spark Plug Wires. and fuel filter. What to do to maintain a used car to keep it in top condition and prevent it from costly repair later?

Congratulations on your new set of wheels.

First source of reference is the owners manual, it should have come with the car, else you should be able to get it from the www.honda.com web site.

The manual will show you all the scheduled maintenance checks and things to change.

Depending on the number of miles on your car and how it was used and maintained,, you may want to consider the following.

Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Breather Element Change at a big box store for a very reasonable price. If you get the premier service, they will check all the other fluid levels, tires, lights, wipers etc. They will also rotate the tires (take them off and put them on different locations ie.. front to back etc).

Depending on the miles and maintenance check on your brakes, and timing belt to see if they need to be replaced. Same for your radiator fluid (coolant), and transmission fluid.

Finally the hoses should be checked for strength and rot.

If the tires are in good shape tread wise and are less than 7 years old you should be in ship shape.

i own a repair shop and i do a lot of preventive maintenance for some of my customers, you have to keep the oil changed real often also keep a close watch on the belts and check the brakes about every 10 thousand miles on it also ,rotate the tires, and mainly when something small goes wrong with it,have it fixed right away people often drive their cars with a lot of small stuff wrong with it,and it turns to bigger things later on down the line, but that's one way to stay ahead of it is fix it when it breaks, and this way when something big does tear up on it at least it don't seem like junk when your fixing it,very often people don't keep up with all the small things on a car and then they wonder why they cant sell it and get their money back out of it,i buy a used vehicle most of the time drive it for 5 years, and have always made money on it after driving it for that long, but their usually nicer when i sell them than when i buy them, good luck with this hope it helps.

  • How much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?

I was told that I need Front brakes, transmission fluid changed and Left Outer Tie Rod End.... now my guess is the brakes are the bulk of the charge... i was told $400-$500. thanks ohh and i have about 113200 miles on my car and its starting to burn oil.. thanks to all for answersHow much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?
That sounds about right for now adays prices...I would call Midas or Meineke, they do all those things and usually offer a better price, only thing is on the breaks they use really cheap ones I would ask for Ceramic Breaks if you can afford it they usually only cost $20.00 more and they last longer put out less dust and just generally work better than the cheap ones, unlessw you plan on selling the car in the next six months. How much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?
Thats a little higher than average. But like someone else said, $300 would be more realistic, especially for a shop that does brakes all day. It's an easy task for them. And your car is actually simple enough already to work on brakes. You should look into doing it yourself if youre capable. And the transmission fluid change is just that, draining the old fluid, putting the new fluid in. The tie rod is simple as well, remove a cotter pin, and a castle nut, unscrewing the tie rod, and installing in reverse order. Then the alignment will be from $50-$100 depending on where you go. If you have a firestone, go there. They have a great deal, it's lifetime alignment for the time you own your car. It runs $129-$179, but you will never have to pay for alignment again as long as you own your car. Its a great deal though. But do a little calling around and find a few different places and go with the best (not cheapest). Dont just look at price. You dont wanna pay $50 for a $300 and be driving down the freeway and your brakes fail. Find a reputable repair shop and try to work a good deal out with them. Most privately owned shops will work with you a better price. How much would these repairs cost for a 2000 honda civic?
Well you must need a complete front brake job if the cost is that high.If you went to the dealer for your brakes that too is possible. Also if you live in one of the northern states. Down here in Arkansas the average cost for a complete front brake job...to wit ...Brake pads new rotors new calipers Bleed and flush complete brake system...Cost around $300.00 The outer tie rod cost is not much but the alignment 4 wheels is around $80.00a transmission drain and fill...By the way that Honda has a drain plug on the transmission just like the oil pan on the engine. Make sure they drain the RIGHT fluid!! that cost around $30.00For better results and gas mileage switch to SYNTHETIC oil. It doesn%26quot;t burn.Brake parts Recommend WAGNER BRAND.

How often should brake fluid, air filter and microfilter be replaced?

I have a 2002 BMW 325ci......it only has about 23,000 miles and I drive it very little....maybe 5K miles per year at most. How often does anyone recommend changing the three things above? Could you tell me how often in both miles and length of time?

The last time I had these three things replaced was October,2006. How long can I wait to do it again??

Thank you so much in advance to all that respond! How often should brake fluid, air filter and microfilter be replaced?
i dont know what bmw's recommendations are however..

    as a general guide:

brake fluid is every 25-30,000 miles or 2 years/as needed

air filter is usually every 10-15,000 miles or as needed

and lastly the micorfilter? would that be known as a cabin air filter?

some makes recommend that to be done every 12,000 or so.

How to get rid of brake fluid?

recently i had to change the clutch master cyclinder in my car as fluid was leaking from it. fluid is now in the carpet at the footwell how do ya get it removed? How to get rid of brake fluid?
Try either dry sawdust or kitty litter and just spread it around in the polluted area, as for the carpet, you may have to just remove it and get new, hydraulic fluid will leave a stain and it may be impossible to get it out. oh well.... *.* happens. How to get rid of brake fluid?
Patience and elbow grease. Brake fluid is not an oil product but more in the family of ethylene glycol. Try getting most of the residual out using wet-dry vac if you can. Then apply carpet shampoo a couple of times. That should return it to a reasonably acceptable state. How to get rid of brake fluid?
Try wiping with a wet cloth. Water removes fluid easily.

2006 Toyota Avalon Master Cylinder Booster Leaking?

I had my regular car oil/brake/brake fluid change on 7/30 at toyota dealership, few weeks later, I was driving on the road, the brake light was on, I didnt have brake. I pulled over to a body shop and my brake fluid was empty. They refilled it. I waited few days to bring my car back to toyota and they said they have to exam it before telling me what happened. They said it was leaking from master cylinder to booster which will cost $1500 to repair. I was shocked! My car is only 2 yrs 9 months old /39000 miles. I believe my warranty has expired. What should I do? Am I out of luck? How about lemon laws? Any ideas? Thanks2006 Toyota Avalon Master Cylinder Booster Leaking?

    My brakes are acting weird?

I was driving home and coming to a red light, pressed on my brakes a little, and nothing happened. I had to press them all the way to the floor in order to get them to work. Do i just need the brake fluid changed or is thisa bigger problem. And how much will this cost me. I am a poor college student. My brakes are acting weird?
make sure your fluid is full if it is then its the master cylinder what make model and year is your car and i'll give you the price of the part and a link to it.My brakes are acting weird?
can be a couple things, master cylinder, or a line leaking. Pump the brakes and see if the pedal seems to come up higher. then check your brake fluid level. if your fluid is full, then more likely master cylinder, if the breaks did not pump up and you are low on fluid, then possible you have a line leaking. check for brake fluid on the ground around each tire.My brakes are acting weird?
Go and have a mechanic diagnose the brakes before you're a poor DEAD college student. Changing brake fluid won't make the car stop better. Brake pads, rotors, and possibly calipers if they are frozen. Master cylinder is possible, check the fluid. My brakes are acting weird?
you might need brake fluid or if you have rear drum brakes they might need adjusted.it also could be the master cylinder.

  • Ford Taurus 98 Brake Prob?

I bought my Taurus 3 years ago and it has about 150,000 miles on it. Last November though, I had money problems because of school. Anyway my battery died and had a blown right tire. So I just used my moms car until I could get it around to getting it fixed. I recently fixed it, but when I did my brakes were totally weird. It was pulling way to the right when I stopped and I had to push all the way down it. All the tires are at the corrent PSI so that not it. So I figured I was low on brake fluid so I added some then took it out for a test drive and they were working a little better, but then out of no where they stopped working...luckily I was close to my house going very slow and my emergency brake worked. So my question is did the brake line blow? Or what could it be? I'm not the greatest with cars...but I know how to do basics like change Oil, Brake pads, Filters etc. If it is brake lines or whatever how much would it cost and could I fix it? Since I can't drive it or pay for laborFord Taurus 98 Brake Prob?
Sounds like one of your brake calliper's had seized when it was off the road and when you started driving it again the hydraulic pressure blew the seal causing a brake failureFord Taurus 98 Brake Prob?
If you don't have a puddle of brake fluid under your car....I believe, bleeding your brakes will cure your problem.....

If you have a puddle of Brake fluid, repair the leak, replace the part that is leaking and then bleed the system again.

How much does it cost to do a "Major Service" to my car?

I own a 1995 BMW 318is, and i haven't had any service in awhile. Recently, I took it to a shop to get something fixed, and I asked them to change my oil since it's been awhile. They called back and said my car needed a %26quot;Major Service,%26quot; that the oil filters were flithy, the brake fluids needed changing, new spark plugs, antifreeze, the works... They quoted me $600 to do it all. Is this a fair price? If not, how much does this usually cost? How much does it cost to do a %26quot;Major Service%26quot; to my car?
the cost ultimately depends on the vehicle, since you have an obvious import, than it is possilbe for the service to be a bit pricey, but I don't think $600 pricey. On average, you should be looking at anywhere from 300 to 400 MAX!! look through you local junk mail or newspaper. you will almost always find places that are having grand openings or are under new ownership and eager for new customers! How much does it cost to do a %26quot;Major Service%26quot; to my car?

$ 600.00 for a BMW? Not bad! Grab it and run.How much does it cost to do a %26quot;Major Service%26quot; to my car?
I'd worry that the price was too cheap and they just wanted to get you in and then actually charge double that. Why not go one step at a time and first do the BMW basic maintenance items scheduled in your owner's manual first. Then see how reasonable they charged just to change the air filter and coolant for example, and compare that to what the dealer charges for the same service. How much does it cost to do a %26quot;Major Service%26quot; to my car?
It's hard to say. It's not an outrageous sum of money if they do all those jobs. Just check that the price includes the cost of parts (sparkplugs) and fluids. $600 isn't particularly expensive if they are putting in decent quality oil - an oil change is the main service on any car, old or new.How much does it cost to do a %26quot;Major Service%26quot; to my car?
it is hard to determine what 600.00 is paying for.. so go to the shop and ask for a breakdown of the charges b4 u pay for them. if u buy antifreeze, urself it will be around 7 to 10 a gal.oil and a filter is about 15 parts only. plug wires and plugs around 80, and fuel and air filter about 20 or so, and brakes, well that is guesswork. my suggestion is this, go to the shop and ask for a list of parts they want to replace. go to the nearest auto parts store that has quality parts.. (not autozone or advance) buy the parts and have them delivered to the shop and tell the service man u r on a tight budget, but u trust him to do the work and not call with another problem. tell him with a witness, that u expect him to do a professional job. u will trust him with ur baby, but he had better be damn sure that the car will be right when he finishes. if he can't swallow the responsibility. take ur car elsewhere. return the parts and start over. they r trying to make ur beemr perfect. so let them make him commit to his word.promise u they r that good, without that fateful cal that somethingelse was discovered.

01 mustang. the break light warning turns on and off..why?

the %26quot;break%26quot; light in the dash turns on once in a while, i know it's a warning that something needs to be fixed or is about to break, can someone tell me what it might be for?. also how do you change the brake fluid?01 mustang. the break light warning turns on and off..why?
Brake inspections are free by law in many states. Or it wont be more than 20 dollars at a place like midas. In order to change the brake fluid, you also have to bleed the brake system, which can be hard to regain a solid brake pedal. You most likely have a leak in your brake system somewhere that is allowing air into the system. It could be a bad line, fitting, or master cylinder. You didnt mention if you brake pedal is softer than it should be, that will tell you if something is immediately wrong. I would take it to a shop sooner than later. bad brakes aren't cool01 mustang. the break light warning turns on and off..why?
You are probably low on fluid. 01 mustang. the break light warning turns on and off..why?
first check the fluid and then might need to replace brake pads and really you dont have to replace the fluid just add when low it last for years you will break or wear out something will before you need to replace fluid brakes are easy do at home job in most case few tool are needed not much harder than fixing a flat tire my wife does her own brake jobs easy job once you know how one works you can do any car or truck.. knowing when and how to check them and knowing how to replace them 01 mustang. the break light warning turns on and off..why?
That is a warning light. As long as your brakes seem to be working ok then.... It is also the light that signals that your parking brake is set. I have a problem similar to that. If your parking brake is set by a pedal pull the release lever and push the pedal up, hard then let go and see if that was your problem. I know its dumb for that light to mean two thing but the is the way ford does it. If that doesn't fix your problem get it checked out.

By the way if you have never changed your brake fluid, you should.

It is often overlooked but is just like any other fluid. It breaks down under pressure and needs to be replaced about every 30 to 45 thousand miles. It is quite possibly the most important fluid in your car because you can't stop without it.

    Corolla spongy brakes?

i just changed the front disc brake pads and rotors on my 2000 corolla and the mechanic said the rear drums still have 45% left on them so i didn't have the rear changed. I'm not exactly sure if this problem was present before the brake change or not but i noticed that my brake is really spongy and i have to press it about 90% down to get a good brake response and after 90% it is really stiff and makes it hard for me to judge how hard i am braking before locking the wheels. This is important cause my car lacks ABS. I have heard that changing the brake fluid and bleeding the lines helps my brakes be more sharper and less spongy but my receipt from the brake job indicates that they did change the brake fluid and did bleed the lines!? so im wondering whether i should take it to toyota instead and ask them to bleed the line and change the brake fluid or just to ask them to inspect the brakes? i know there is a 80$ diagnostic charge if no problem is found and im wondering whether i should risk it?Corolla spongy brakes?
just drive it it will get betterCorolla spongy brakes?
whoever changed your brake pads and rotors must have not followed the proper procedure to bleed brakes. OR did it half assed. i suggest taking it back to them, and telling them politely to do it again, or have a technician try and press the brakes and see what he thinks about it. if its obvious to you , it should be obvious to him. if u took it to a good shop, theyll re do it for you at no cost.Corolla spongy brakes?
you may have air in your brakes system, noot a big deal just bleed the brakes, did you remove a caliper when you did the change,it could also just e the brakes you got,did you go cheap?cause you get what you pay for,

  • Question about using wrong brake fluid and brake failure?

A brake service chain did a complete brake job 1000 miles ago (about a month) in my 01 Jeep. A week after my oil change place pointed out my brake fluid was at the empty mark (about an ounce or two low). I took it back to the guys who did the brake job and they reinspected the system and confirmed it was low and topped it off. Fast forward to yesterday and my brakes have failed. The brake shop says there is some contaminating oil in my master cyl and that caused the failure. My question is how long would it take for an incompatible oil being used in the brake fluid to cause brake failure? It could be the entire system was filled with the wrong stuff or it could be that just the top off was the wrong stuff.Question about using wrong brake fluid and brake failure?
No sir, because a member of my family put power steering fluid in the master cylinder, the brakes quit in 50 miles, he had to flush the lines, overhaul all the calipers and the master cylinder. Expensive oops. Don't jump to conclusions that it isn't JUST the master cylinder that failed, and not because of bad fluid, it was just done. Replacing just that might be the cure. HOWEVER DO KNOW THIS The type of hydraulic fluid that brake fluid is has a characteristic that sucks moisture from the air, so if the master cylinder doesn't have a good seal under the cap or lid, it will expedite this, and master cylinder failure. My saturn owners manual says to flush the brake fluid every 30kmi or 24mos., due to this. (I did it once, 5yrs. ago). Do You?

I will never expect any auto repair place to be on the level, either.Question about using wrong brake fluid and brake failure?
Could have been either. I'd say wrong to start with. Doesn't take long to mess it up.Question about using wrong brake fluid and brake failure?
That's why I don't use or recommend the Jiffy type lube joints. They hire a bunch of kids who don't know brakes from power steering and screw up too many times. I know of at least a half dozen brake failures that occurred shortly after an oil change at a quick change place and wound up being oil in the brake fluid. To answer your question on how long it takes to ruin the brakes it's only matter of hours or a day or two at the most. The oil destroys the seals in the brake system.

IM GETTIN A USED 2004 MERCEDEZ BENZ CLK 500....HELP!?

IM THINKING ABOUT GETTING A USED 2004 CLK500...BUT THE CAR HAS NO WARRANTY ON IT. HOW DOES MAINTENANCE ON THESE CARS WORK ONCE THE WARRANTY IS UP? IS IT JUST OIL CHANGE/BRAKES/FLUIDS? IF SO, WHY CANT I JUST DO THIS AT HOME? WHATS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE MERCEDES THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO DO IT? IVE DONE ALL MY OIL CHANGES ON NON LUXURY CARS MYSELF, SHOULD THIS BE ANY DIFFERENT? ALSO, IS THIS CAR RELIABLE? ANY COMMENTS HELP, PLEASE GET BACK TO ME.IM GETTIN A USED 2004 MERCEDEZ BENZ CLK 500....HELP!?
2004 clk500 is pretty reliable car, and looks, feels and handles 100x better than any lexus. if you can do basic things like oil change, replacing spark plags and brake pads than this car will be cheap to maintain. working on mercedes is really easy, and you can do everything at home. oil filter on mercedes is located at top of engine, which makes it pretty easy to change, you can actually just get one of those oil suction devices like %26quot;topsider%26quot; and change the oil without even getting under the car. and you can change the oil only once a year / 12000 miles whichever comes first, just use a good synthetic oil approved by mercedes, mobil1 0w40 is pretty common one that dealer uses. also spark plugs are only changed every 100000 miles. mercedes in general are really easy to work on if you have basic mechanical and electronic skills.

mercedes dealership is usually pretty expensive, so once the warranty is over there is no point taking it there for basic maintanance, and that's why people think mercedes are expensive since dealer charges more than $150/hour. if you use a mechanic that knows how to work on them will be a lot more cheaper since they charge twice less than the dealer.

enjoy your clk500, it;s a great car. good luckIM GETTIN A USED 2004 MERCEDEZ BENZ CLK 500....HELP!?
It might have a few issues but nothing too serious, it doesn't have Lexus' legendary reliability, but still it's ok.

You probably don't have to take it to the dealership just to get an oil change, but it's recomended.

If it does brake down(which it might) all you have to do take it out to the dealership and pay to have it fixed, which can be a little expensive.IM GETTIN A USED 2004 MERCEDEZ BENZ CLK 500....HELP!?
You realize that when something breaks on a Mercedes it is going to be uber-expensive. It's not like a Honda, where you need to do just oil changes, brakes, and change the fluids once a year. This car has a lot of electronic bits as well as sensors.

What happens if the wrong fluid was put in where the brake fluid goes? What is the fix for that?

We have an 81 impala and when the brake pedal is pressed, the brakes are tight. Someone said it might be the incorrect fluid was put into the brake fluid. We just got the car four months ago and this just startd. We have only had the pcv valve replaced and an oil change done, both by Jiffy Lube.

How much would that cost to fix? What happens if the wrong fluid was put in where the brake fluid goes? What is the fix for that?
If by tight you mean that you have to apply more force than usual for the brakes to work you may be describing a bad brake booster. That would not be a fluid related issue. The checks for that are really simple. If you find the master and booster there will be a vacuum hose on the booster (a really big black one) that is attatched to a valve that makes an L. Carefully pull that out by the valve and put your finger over the hose and have a helper see if the brakes get harder to push. If they do than the booster is ok. If you hear an air sound when pushing the brake the booster is probably bad. As for weather or not the wrong fluid is in the Master cylinder that is simple to detect. find the master cylinderr and take the lid off. get a cup of regular tap water. put a few drops of the fluid in the master into the water. If the fluid sinks into and dissappears into the water it is brake fluid. If you see stuff floating on the top of the water you have a big problem. do not just bleed the brakes as if there is oil in the master that will just push it through the rest of the system and make the situation worse.. I would say that whoever has been servicing and put the wrong fluid in your master should man-up and cover repairs. What happens if the wrong fluid was put in where the brake fluid goes? What is the fix for that?
bleed your brakes, you ought to be able to do this with the help of someone to pump the brakes, or a brake shop can do it. it shouldnt cost too muchWhat happens if the wrong fluid was put in where the brake fluid goes? What is the fix for that?
Depends on what you mean by tight. I doubt it is a fluid problem. Check your brake pads ... if they are worn down and the steel backplate is grinding against the rotor then the brakes grab badly when you press the pedal down. To replace the rotors and pads will cost you about $400 .... about $140 if you do it yourself. What happens if the wrong fluid was put in where the brake fluid goes? What is the fix for that?
if you are describing that the brake pedal is hard after the pcv change i would be looking at that....What happens if the wrong fluid was put in where the brake fluid goes? What is the fix for that?
The calipers may be shot,or go ahead and bleed all the fluid out and use Dot 3 fluid to replace it.What happens if the wrong fluid was put in where the brake fluid goes? What is the fix for that?
tsh-66 is correct in what he says but what he is trying to inform you on how to test for incorrect fluid in the master cylinder is to remove some fluid out of the cylinder (a cooking baster can be used)., put some of this removed fluid to a cup (jar or dish) of water as required. If the fluid is incorrect and the system needs to be bleed, remove all the old fluid from the master cylinder first and fill with new fresh DOT 3 and bleed each wheel cylinder until the fluid runs clean. Any questions, e-mail me.

Need help with bleeding brake lines; '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC?

Reservoir was dry this morning. Added amount of proper fluid to fill. Replaced cap, ran engine, pumping brakes. No change in fluid level. Seems as if fluid isn't being drawn into lines. Brakes are still dangerously soft. How can I bleed the lines to get air out?Need help with bleeding brake lines; %26039;98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC?
the best way to get the process started is to gravity bleed it,with anti lock brakes you really don't want to pump them too much, you wont get the right amount of pedal back up on it that it needs, the best way i have found is to gravity bleed them,if you have a repair manual it gives a real good procedure for doing this, but pumping them will not get them back up like they should be the first time,if they went all the way down their going to be hard to get right again, good luck with it.Need help with bleeding brake lines; %26039;98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC?
Crack the bleeder valve on the caliper while someone else pumps and holds the brake pedal down. Once fluid starts to seep out the brake bleed is completeNeed help with bleeding brake lines; %26039;98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC?
First you need to determine where the leak is. Going through all the work to bleed them only to have the continuously leak is putting you and others in a dangerous situation. To bleed the brakes, it is a two person concept if you don't have a brake bleeder. Have one person pump the breaks. Have them hold the pedal once pressure builds. Start with the furthest wheel cylinder from the master cylinder (right rear when looking from the rear). Once pressure is build, turn the bleeder valve (have a hose connected and drain into a jar with the hose down in the fluid). Once the bleeder valve is opened, the pressure will release off the pedal. Have your friend pump it again. Once pressure is build, loosen the bleeder valve. Once pressure is relieved, tighten the valve and have them pump the breaks again. Soon you will have fluid drain into the jar. Once bubbles disappear from the fluid in the jar, move to the left rear and repeat. Once that's done, do the right front, repeat. Lastly, the left front. Keep an eye on the break fluid in the master cylinder. If your system was dry, it will take at least 3 or 4 jugs of break fluid. Use no less than DOT 3. Good luck.Need help with bleeding brake lines; %26039;98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC?
agree with prof gearhead...find the leak first...your brake system is a closed system...it doesn't lose fluid or get air in the system by itself.

the first time you pump up the pedal, it may not get hard...still have your buddy hold the pedal down while you loosen a bleeder and then tighten it back down. You might not even get an fluid out the first time or so, especially if you ran it dry at the reservoir.

By the time you get done replacing the leaky part (rear wheel cylinder?) you will be a pro at saying...PUMP IT.... HOLD IT....PUMP IT....HOLD IT

and the person in the car will probably be quite tired of it as well...(my wife has been behind the wheel of many a car helping me bleed brakes)

  • How much does it "cost" to own a 2002-2004 745 BMW? As far as basic upkeep, maintenance, etc...?

Ok so I own a 2002 Cadillac Deville (love big cars) and I learned that things on the Cadillac are more expensive than on other cars, but still most of the basic things can be done at a regular place like Midas, things such as oil changes, brake changes, etc. The only thing I can't do is a transmission fluid change.

So how is the upkeep on a BMW 2002-2004 cost? Can you take it to a regular place to do fluid changes? How about brakes? I'm not a big person on dealerships (they overcharge) but some cars are built to literally make you take them to the dealership. How much does it %26quot;cost%26quot; to own a 2002-2004 745 BMW? As far as basic upkeep, maintenance, etc...?
well, i can answer this one in two words: A FORTUNEHow much does it %26quot;cost%26quot; to own a 2002-2004 745 BMW? As far as basic upkeep, maintenance, etc...?
What is people's obsession's with buying a used luxury car that they probably couldn't afford when it was brand new? The maintenance and upkeep are not that much worse, only the parts because they are high quality (strong+light). But if something goes wrong with the iDrive, good luck at an oil changers. If you are concerned about the tiny extra cost for maintenance for a high end car, you shouldn't buy a BMW. Besides, that car is ugly. Why do you think they gave it a facelift (2005)? Any enthusiast knows Chris bangle flushed the awesome old styling down the toilet.

How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?

My wife took her 2005 van (28,750 miles) in for a oil change only to return with a $250 receipt which included a brake and power steering fluid flush. How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
Many people will probably disagree with me on this but here it goes. Brake fluid is hydroscopic meaning it absorbs moisture. The reason it does this is because as we all know oil floats on top of water, and brake fluid being hydroscopic, instead of the water going to the bottom of the braking system and boilling causing you to lose your brakes it will disperse it throughout the system. Not only this but the rubber parts in the braking system break down and the brake fluid breaks down. Hard pieces of dirt get into your braking system and act like a sandblaster to the softer parts destroying your braking system, including expensive ABS parts. Flushing gets rid of these contaminants and the moisture in the system. Same goes with the power steering system and fluid. You just bought some cheap insurance for some expensive repairs. I flush all my fluids every 20k miles. How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
I change my brake fluid every 3 years, and go 5 on the p/s. I doubt theres a spec for that in the owners manual, since there is usually a brake or p/s repair requiring the fluid to be changed anyway. How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
you don't need this done before 50 thousand miles at the least, they just suckered her in to having it done, that was pretty high for it also, but its done now,so you wont have to worry about it for a long time,i never do it to any customers cars unless it has 50 k or more on it,its just a waste if you do,good luck with it.How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?

    Brake fluid flush?

I've NEVER flushed brake fluid on anything I own.

They just don't build things like they used to........

Come to think of it, I've NEVER flushed my power steering either. How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
    Most manufactures recommend every 30,000miles.

The brake fluid flush is an absolute must,as brake fluid absorbs moisture,so the boiling point is lowered bellow the safe temp level which is 510degs F as for the power steering,it can get burnt,if it had a burnt smell it is advisable to change it,the cost of the flush is a fraction of the cost for new steering gear and labour. How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
funny no one recommends it but on motorcycles its every year and they use dot 4 or 5

so every 2 years on your car would not be a bad idea

most loser mechs. don't change it on a brake job especially if they don't change a caliperHow many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
Your wife got ripped off. Any manufacturer recommended service interval clearly shows at 30,000 miles to have fluid level and conditions inspected, not replaced. Most manufacturers also recommend against any flushing of these systems. Brake fluid doesn't break down and lower its boiling point for at least 3 years, or 36,000 miles. Some shops recommend brake fluid flushing with a brake service, which isn't really a flush, but a change. Power steering flushing is about as effective as trying to mow water. Tell them you want your money back, or you want to see why they saw a need for a fluid change. Show them your manufacturer's service recommendations for 27,500mi and also 30,000mi. Then ask them to show you proof that your fluid was bad. When they can't produce, contact their corporate office. They will refund your money. How many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
I was told 40,000 miles on my wifes G-6

I have never done that on my Dodge Ram 1500 and it has 240,000 miles and no brake work except pads and shoes. Never changed p/s fluid probably been in there over 10 yearsHow many miles is recommended before your first brake fluid and power steering flush?
You don't do these things no matter what the mileage. You better take the car for oil change. You got ripped good. I bet they did nothing except charge for service you never received.. This would be an impossible task to do during an oil chamge. If there was some reson for this service it would be at least an 8 hour job.

How can I turn off the brake light indicator & TCS light on 2003 Honda Accord?

I just left the shop to have my brake fluid and oil changed. After leaving the shop I noticed the TCS light %26amp; brake light remained on. After 5 mins of driving the TCS light has gone off but the brake light remains on. What could be the problem? How can I turn off the brake light indicator %26amp; TCS light on 2003 Honda Accord?
Just to tell you straight off, theres no way you can turn it off yourself (no buttons). Any car years 2000 and up are programed to leave those dash lights on until the car gets hooked up to a shop computer (diagnostic computer) and only them can really turn that off for you. The TCS is your Traction Control System which means that it turned on cuz the car had no traction (your wheels were spinning) and the TCS slows the tires down until the car got a grip on the road. The brake light might be cuz your brake shoes or rotors might be worn out but not too sure. My suggestion to you is to take the car back to the shop and ask them why this is happening only moments after you took your car out of the shop.

How often do i do Car Maintance?

I want to keep my car up in maintance but how often do i get an:

    Oil change

    tire rotated

    new brakes

    fluids changed

    Transmission check or drained

    Ect.

you kinda get the point can you help me please. How often do i do Car Maintance?
When to change oil? You can not look at oil and determine either condition unless there is particulate matter or sludge present. And unless oil is subjected to extremely high temps and breaks down, the oil itself doesn’t really “go bad”. But the additive package does “go away” over time. So the correct interval is a guess. A rule of thumb is the greater percentage of “severe” conditions, the shorter the interval between changes. What’s severe? Heat of summer, very cold temps, stop/go driving, high engine loads; which is about everyone. What’s not severe? A vehicle that runs at near constant load for extended periods of time without stopping and starting. So you’ve got to decide.

My advice? Change oil and filter between 3,000 and 5,000 miles under really severe conditions and 5 – 7,500 if the engine’s being babied.

Tiore rotation: Every 10-15,000 miles or sooner if all tires are NOT wearing the same.

Brake service: As required. Often depends on how you drive.

Fluids: I'm not a big fan of changing fluids. Often more harm is done than good. Keep them all at the level specified and you should be OK. Engine coolant is the excpetion where 24 months is generally appropriate.

Transmission: Check the level evey month or two, but I wouldn't change it as often as some OEMs recommend for the reason cited above. A good automatic transmisson should not require the fluid to be changed more often than 100,000 miles unless there's indications of a problem with the fluid.. But like I say, that's my personnel opinion. How often do i do Car Maintance?
wel oil change is every 3000 to 4000 miles tires rotated every 20000 miles brakes 40k to 50k coolant flushed every 30k and trans fluid check every 1000 miles changed at 50kHow often do i do Car Maintance?
It depends on the type of car you have and the year. For example, some of new cars say oil changed only every 3500-3750 miles. I would suggest looking in your owner's manual-it gives a schedule for all the stuff.

If you don't have one, go to the website of your car and it should offer maintenance tips for year and type of car.How often do i do Car Maintance?
The Oil change can be done every 6,000 to 9,000 miles depend on the size of the car and the type of car and how often you use the car. you can check the from your local Tyre shop they should advice and it's normally a free services. New brakes can go up 10,000 miles depending if the car is auto or manual. the rest could go up to three or more years depending on usageHow often do i do Car Maintance?
No Problem, Just do as the owners manual says,Brakes should last 40 to50 thousand miles if you don't ride them, Check transmission every other oil change, Rotate tires ever other oil change and you be OKHow often do i do Car Maintance?
    Ok, as I learned it it's :

Oil change every 3 months or 3,000 miles.

Tires rotated every other oil change.

Brakes checked each time you rotate tires because different people and different vehicles wear out brakes at different times. (many shops will check this for free by the way)

Transmissions should be flushed every 30,000 miles.

Brake fluid changed every 12,000 miles or at least once a year.

Coolant depends on what kind you have. If you have the old fashioned green stuff you need to flush it every 30,000 miles refilling it with a 50/50 mix of coolant and purified water. If you have the new Dexcool (orange) stuff you should flush it every 70,000 miles with a 50/50 mix of coolant and purified water. How often do i do Car Maintance?
oil change/tire rotation same time do it every 7500 miles all multipurpose oils are good for 7500 miles,do your brakes every 2 years brakes get very hot so they can only with stand the heat for so long then theyll go bad, transmission, power steering fluid same type do every 30,000 miles.coolant flush once a year.put fuel cleaner in your tank every 6 mnonthHow often do i do Car Maintance?
Well oil changes should be done at about every 3 months or 3000 miles. This is a basic rule of thumb as some oils are still affective up to 5000 miles or in a very few instances, 7500 miles. Tires, I think I would go every other oil change at 6000 miles. Brakes, I usually change them as soon as I start hearing the front brakes make noise and check the rear at the same time. Transmission can be checked at every oil change and changed every year. This is a very basic and general information. It would be best advised to talk with a trusted mechanic or dealer service writer. How often do i do Car Maintance?

The best way is to have the brake system power bleed. However in a pinch you can bleed then with a helper. Have your helper pump the brake system up and hold the peddle while you crack the bleeder valve on the caliper. When there is no more fluid coming out of the valve, close it off and have your helper pump the system back up again. Continue to repeat this process until you no longer see bubbled in the fluid.I attempted to change the rear brakes on my Volvo 940 today and i unbolted the caliper. Now i have to push all
first thing, check the banjo bolt on the brake hose, thats attached to the caliper, it might be loose. you probably have to bleed the brakes. did you pump the brakes after you put new pads on to set the piston against the pads?

What does a full service on a car include?

I want to get my car serviced but not sure even if a full service will include what I am after. I suspect there might be some air in my brake fluid because my brakes are quite spongy and not as effective as they used to be.

Ideally I would like my oil changes, brake fluid bled and changed and spark plugs aswell, but will a %26quot;full service%26quot; include all/any of these?

Also, how much roughly would I be looking at paying? I got quoted 拢130 before any major parts, is that about right? What does a full service on a car include?
You need to talk with the garage doing the work to determine what is or isn't included in a service of your choice.

My brake fluid is black how bad is that?

My brake fluid is like super black ( espresso like color) what can be causing it from going from normal color to black. I dont brake hard and it was last changed about 3 years ago ( how often should I change it?) So whats the deal and how bad is it?My brake fluid is black how bad is that?
Depending on who you ask, brake fluid should be replaced ever 1-2 years. The black color can be from contaminates entering the system and blackening when they get hot. I recommend taking your vehicle to your local shop and having them flush the fluid and check your overall braking system. My brake fluid is black how bad is that?
Black you say? 3 years??! Go change it out asap! Also, check for hoes cracking, you may need to replace the hoes as well.My brake fluid is black how bad is that?
It contaminates from moisture and air. If it looks bad replace it, to avoid system damage and maybe brake failure. My brake fluid is black how bad is that?
I dont know details but i do know that, that is bad! And I'm pretty sure you should change it frequently like 6months to a year.. i think every yearat least once...right? lol. i hope you find your answer. My brake fluid is black how bad is that?
Brake fluid should remain clear. There is a possibility the color in yours is from rotted seals and rust and corrosion in the brake lines and cylinders. Flush all the old fluid throught the lines with new fluid. Check for leaks. Replace any faulty parts. The deal may be brake failure and need to replace many brake system parts. My brake fluid is black how bad is that?
brake fluid is %26quot;typically%26quot; 2-3years/30,000 miles unless you are racing, or in a car with special brake needs.

So you are just on schedule for a change and not necessarily overdue. Some people go a decades without changing the fluid, and brakes work fine.

Although brake fluid can come in different colors, typically black is not one of the good colors which might signal a problem. You should get it changed for sure and checked out.

Take care to not open and examine brake fluid during your own maintenance, it should stay sealed as it is sensitive to moisture in the air.

Brake system fluid leak? From inside of piston.?

Ok, here's the story. Today i changed my brake pads for a first time. First of i had issue with this piston which was preventing me from inserting whole thing.. so i was trying figure out how to do that... so i pushed brakes and this thing came out more... I was like wth... but then i pushed 1 more time to make sure... Then i asked my friend what to do and he said that i have to push it in with scredriver (there's whole in this big thing so i had support... While pushing i got some brake fluid leak and now this thing dropping from this piston thing...

Could someone help me... I took test drive after.. looks like everything is working... but i fluid is leaking...Brake system fluid leak? From inside of piston.?
you now need a new brake caliper, never use a screwdriver to push the piston back in, you need a c-clamp to do that job, don't drive the car until you get it fixed as you will lose all your brake fluid and your brakes plus you will soak the new brake pads with fluid and ruin them and have to buy new brake pads.Brake system fluid leak? From inside of piston.?
Do not drive it any further - you are going to lose your brakes at worse, or contaminate the new pads with brake fluid at best.

I highly recommend that you have the caliper replaced or rebuilt - I suspect that you have damaged the seal on the piston.Brake system fluid leak? From inside of piston.?
I'm not sure, but are you pushing in the piston in the brake caliper? The caliper is where the brake pads are located. When you press down on the brake pedal, brake fluid pressure builds inside the brake lines and that causes the calipers to squeeze the brake pads onto the disc and stops the car. It sounds to me like you pushed in the caliper piston to make room for the new brake pads which are thicker. This is the right thing to do in order to make them fit, otherwise there is no space. But, when you push in the caliper piston, you are making brake fluid pressure inside your brake lines the same way as when you push down on the pedal. The fluid pressure has to be relieved somewhere. Now, where is the fluid leaking from? Is it the part under the hood where you pour fluid into this little round container with a black top? If that is where the leak is coming from, then everything is ok, it just means that when you pushed the piston in, it made the brake fluid spill over in this container because that is the Brake Cylinder and it supplies the fluid to all brakes. Just make sure that it is properly filled to the %26quot;Maximum%26quot; line and wipe off any that may have touched your car, this fluid will eat your paint.

If the leak is coming from anywhere else, you need to have a mechanic take a look because then it could be more serious. If there is a leak, then there is less brake pressure and that could be dangerous. I hope this long answer helps you.
